January, 2014

Happy New Year, everyone!

The year 2014 is off to a good start for us, as we continue to perform regularly at Tucker's Kozy Korner, Bohanan's Prime Steaks and Seafood and the Boardwalk Bistro in San Antonio. At each of these venues, cornetist Jim Cullum leads a quartet that includes pianist John Sheridan, bassist Phil Flanigan and drummer Hal Smith.

On New Year's Day the Quartet played during the afternoon at Tucker's; a "good luck" party organized by the new owner: Chris Cullum! Chris is renowned for the gourmet hamburgers he serves from the "Attaboy" food truck in San Antonio. He has also been the head chef at Tucker's for quite awhile and in late 2013 made arrangements to purchase the historic bar. Congratulations, Chris!

We have two special engagements this month:

▪ Thursday, Jan. 16 for the San Antonio Cocktail Conference at the Majestic Theatre. Representatives of major distilleries will be on hand to describe the delights of their products and expert mixologists will prepare cocktails for the lucky attendees! The full Jim Cullum Jazz Band will perform, with Mike Pittsley, trombone; Allan Vaché, clarinet; and Howard Elkins, guitar added to the quartet. There will also be some guest musicians present, and the augmented group will lead a New Orleans Second Line-style parade through the Majestic! This event benefits HeartGift San Antonio as well as ChildSafe. Visit www.sanantoniococktailconference.com for details.

▪ Saturday, Jan. 18 we will perform at Bohanan's, with guests: David Jellema, cornet; Mike Pittsley and Kenny Rupp, trombones; Jonathan Doyle, clarinet; and Howard Elkins, guitar. The full band rarely plays in San Antonio, so here is another chance to hear the seven-piece group, plus some of our good friends!

Sadly, we mourn the loss of former JCJB clarinetist Bobby Gordon. Bobby passed away in San Diego on Dec. 31. He played with the group back in the "Happy Jazz Band" days and made some recordings with the band that are considered classics in the world of Traditional Jazz. He also appeared as a guest with the Jim Cullum Jazz Band on the "Chicago Reeds" program for Riverwalk, and on two programs with Hal Smith's Roadrunners that were recorded by Riverwalk at the Sacramento Jubilee in the late 1990s. Below is a photo of the Happy Jazz Band with Bobby on clarinet in 1975. The others are: Mark Hess, trombone; Cliff Gillette, piano; Bob Black, banjo; Buddy Apfel, sousaphone; and Harvey Kindervater, drums. Bobby was a great musician and we will all miss his wonderful clarinet sound.

We hope that 2014 will be an enjoyable and prosperous year for all of you, and we look forward to seeing you in San Antonio.
